Mr John Melton struck us as a very likeable person. He is living the dream and it shows in his smile and attitude to people. Honest and open, very easy to talk to. But above all John Melton is a fantastic leader and a team builder in the Modere company. He is a real pro of the modern era who uses the social media as easily as other people use a toothbrush. In this interview with rankingmlm.com he opens up and tells us stories about himself, MLM and of course about the current situation in the world.
Hello again Mr John Melton. There is only one topic in the world these days, so I would like to know your opinion. How do you think Coronavirus will affect MLM?
You know, the truth is that there’s still all kinds of unknowns in terms of Coronavirus so it’s really too hard to guess how it can impact the MLM business. But you know this too shall pass and I think the teams that come together and work together, the companies that come together, they will persevere. However, I already see a lot of companies right now that are vulnerable. Me personally, I keep telling my team: “The number one thing we have to do right now – is to stay active, stay positive!
So is there any difference in terms of you running your business these days? Is it not easier for you to recruit people for instance?
In some ways yes, because there’s people that maybe are more open right now but then there’s some people that don’t spend money. So if someone doesn’t want to spend money and they want to hoard all their cash because their mindset is fear, doubt, uncertainty. You know, they live in scarcity so they might not spend money to start a business or buy products.
I have another concern. I wonder how long people are going to wear masks and gloves and stay at home. I think it is going to be a permanent emotional effect of this. I think people are going to be emotionally damaged for a long time. And another concern I have in mind is: what are they going to do moving forward so we can prevent this type of outbreak from happening?
Mr John Melton. How big is your structure and how do you, as a leader, communicate with them in this situation?
We have over 12,000 people on our Facebook group. We do a lot of posts in there. We do Facebook live shows. The company also has done an incredible job communicating. Our CEO or top leaders, our executives. And this is the funny thing: we do a lot of communicating anyway so it’s not like we need to change a lot because we’re already very used to communicating virtually. And also I have so many messenger chats with my team. But I’m very organized when it comes to that. In my mind I have my whole team team mapped out. Where all my best people are or my top producers, my leaders. I have just always been like that I’ve always paid attention to producers. I’ve always paid attention to people that are active, that have influenced. I’m also not paying attention to the majority of the conversations that are happening but I’ll pop in with positivity, tips, ideas, audio clips, videos ,whatever. I’m always showing and providing value and support. And of course my top top leaders, I’m always available for them.
We collaborate, work well together. We have an abundance mentality, everybody helps everybody. I really feel like when people work together there’s a better team spirit, better production and ultimately better retention. which is really what we all want. We want more people to join us and we really want them to continue to buy from us and continue to work the business. So we’ve got a really good culture and I think that’s the most important thing that any company can have in order to have a long-term network marketing business.
FOR ME AS A EUROPEAN, IS IT VERY INTERESTING TO INTERVIEW A NETWORK MARKETER FROM THE UNITED STATES. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE AMERICAN MARKET AND COMPARE IT TO THE EUROPEAN MARKET?
We have a lot of teams in Europe and maybe there are some differences but I feel like people are still wanting to make money. People want to make money everywhere. And now people are stuck at home and it is a unique time for network marketers. We don’t want to look like being opportunistic or take advantage of people, preying on people. We want to do something for people! And they are staying at home and worrying about money. I’ve never seen a better time for us, network marketers to promote our business the way we do things. However with that being said, I do think there are differences in different countries, different cultures but you can see that within the same country! For instance, if I recruit a person in New York, it is going to be a different type of person versus I bring in someone from California.
Different mentalities, different philosophies. You know you get these people like up north, man they’re just all business, straight to the point. But I find a lot of Europeans are like that too. I don’t really find that people are all that different all over the world. I find there just more different types of people in different parts of the world.
You have created with your wife Nadya My Lifestyle Academy. Please tell us how you both complement each other in business and also something more about your joint project?
It’s a huge advantage for me, to have Nadya. I have strengths and weaknesses, and likes and dislikes like anyone else. She loves doing stuff that I don’t like doing and vice versa. I’m the one building the Modere team. I’m the one in the trenches who is really supporting the team and doing all the day-to-day stuff. And my wife Nadya handles our personal brand, My Lifestyle Academy. She does the blogs and the Instagram posts. She runs the whole virtual team that we have that has people all over the world that work for us. I don’t even know how to log gin to my website. We love working together.
There are definetely times when it’s tough. But you know… We met in network marketing. We grew up together in network marketing. We have kids because of network marketing. The tough part about us is that we are both very ‘a personalities’, so we defenitely fight, like any other married couple. And we will fight like maybe I want to talk about a business and I want to talk about that at 11:30 at night. But we figured out a way to work together. She is the decicion maker and the one in charge of this stuff and I’m the decicion maker and the one in charge of that stuff. But it did take time to figured that out.
The last quetions: how do you create your personal brand?
I realized years ago that I did not like having to find people to talk to about my business. I just don’t feel like having to talk to everybody and I realized that if I can’t build my business from home then it’s not a home business. Look I still teach people: you need to prospect, you need to ask people if they’re open, you can’t be afraid of rejection. But I would prefer to do it online. It’s easier to get rejected online. It’s ackward in person. But the truth is: I want to generate leads. I want people coming to me and I don’t know a single human that would ever tell me otherwise.
So that’s why I started my personal brand. I wanted to build an audience, a community, a following, a network – online! So I’d never have to worry about running out of people to talk to. And that’s how it all started, that was my pinpoint. And obviously it evolved over time. We started having people from other network marketing companies that were not looking for new MLM company but they wanted to learn from us. So we started creating info products, and courses and academies.
To me that’s a really important piece to what we do is having a way to provide value for network marketers in other MLM companies. And I’m not here to you know just recruit people in my company. I want to help people in other companies. Number one – because I love it. I think I know what to do, what’s duplicatable. Where to start someone off. What you could do if you want to go to a big time brand. I think what it really boils down to two is that if you can help people and offer them a solution then you have a business that you could potentially create as well.
