The most important thing in any business is often knowledge supported by experience. It is what gives you an advantage, broadens your horizons, opens new doors and helps achieve goals. And from whom is it best to learn such secrets of knowledge, if not from the recognized and respected leaders. As part of our new series of expert articles, we will ask world network marketing leaders to share their know-how and insights. As the first Ucheya Clinton, a young leader from Nigeria, he will tell us about the importance of mentoring in MLM.
What is mentorship?
Mentorship is a relationship between two people where the individual with more experience, knowledge, and connections is able to pass along what they have learned to a more junior individual within a certain field.
In network marketing, mentor-mentee relationship is very important for the growth of the business.
Your mentor who in most cases should be your upline. I also understand that there are uplines who aren’t experienced and have no successful story with which to show you a path to their success, but that is no excuse.
If you have an upline with no success and experience, reach out to his/her upline. I mean, your sponsor has a sponsor, reach out to him/her to mentor you if he/she has experience and is already successful.
Why should you have a mentor?
A mentor helps you gain clarity and shorten the length of time which it will take you to succeed in the company you’re in. An upline with 6 months to 1 year experience can’t do much compared to an upline with 10-20 years experience with a success story.
There is a strategy behind their success and if you don’t reach out to them to show you, you will not know what it is. You can’t call your upline your mentor when he/she doesn’t know you as a mentee. Reaching out to your experienced and successful upline to be your mentor means you want a close relationship where he/she will work with you consistently teaching/coaching using strategies that can be duplicated by you easily to achieve your goals.
By experience, I have seen successful uplines that became who they are because they were at the right place at the right time, when you reach out to them to mentor you, they have nothing strategic to show you how they did it. Avoid such people if you want to succeed.
An experienced upline and mentor will:
1. Push you harder than you expect
2. Guide you to ask better questions
3. Expect continuous improvement
4. Dare you to dream big
5. Push you to challenge assumptions
6. Be a lifelong student
7. Appreciate self-taught mentees
8. Teach you how to think, not what to think.
As a mentee, you must have a clear objective that is specific and measurable. You will have time wasted experience if you are not committed. You must be willing and eager to learn and apply immediately what your mentor is teaching you.
Your upline who is your mentor will want you to succeed because that increases his/her success story and makes him/her more money within the company and industry at large.
Over time, you too will use same strategies from your mentor to mentor a fresh person within the company. Mentor-mentee relationship is key to succeeding in Network Marketing if you must succeed.
