BENITA, COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT OF YOUR PERSONAL STORY, PLEASE? WHAT WAS YOUR LIFE LIKE BEFORE YOU CAME ACROSS THE CANTIENICA METHOD?
I was a successful journalist, worked as editor in chief of Annabelle (Switzerland), Vogue (Germany), Shape (Germany). Then I worked as Freelancer. I loved my job.
Personally, I suffered more and more from after-effects of my severe scoliosis. That is a curvature in the spine. It was diagnosed when I was 6 and it was crippling me more and more. When all Physicians I consulted recommended replacement of several joints and stiffening of the spine I revolted, “how shall I handle artificial body parts, when I can’t handle my own natural bones!”
That was the start for my body research. I had tried every therapy I could get hold of. Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique and Rolfing helped me to live as good as possible with the ailments. I decided I wanted more. What I wanted was to change the structures of my bones. I wanted to adjust my body to the original blueprint, which must have been sane and whole.
This was the beginning of a fascinating journey in which I still don’t see an end. I discover ever finer connections in my and the bodies of others. My body has become a Stradivary, coming of age, shattered and bruised, yet it plays the most beautiful “music of life” I could ever imagine.
I HAVE READ ON ONE OF THE WEBSITES DEDICATED TO THE CANTIENICA THAT THESE EXERCISES SEEM UNUSUAL AND ATYPICAL AT FIRST. WHY IS THAT?
People seek quick fixes. People get promised quick fixes. “Squeeze your buttocks and press your back onto the floor”, is still a typical instruction. In my method people have to be mindful, self-aware. The instructions are very detailed and precise. For the given example it would be: “Feel your sit bones, pull them closer to each other. Keep the glutei relaxed. Widen the pelvic crest.” You have to be willing to get to know your bones. You have to get to know the body house you live in. That is new to most people.
ARE THERE ANY VALUES, ANY GENERAL HUMAN IDEAS, THAT CANTIENICA FOLLOWS OR PROMOTE?
Your body is sacred. It is a masterpiece. Your mind is guest in your body. Treat it well and it treats you well.
Life expectancy grows at a speed we could not imagine 100 years ago. We doubled our life span within this 100 years. “Traditional evolution”, if I my call it so, does not work that fast. Evolution cannot keep up with our speed. It is no longer search for food and shelter. It is way beyond. We have to take our evolution in our own hands. I decide now and here how I want to become 100% flexible, strong, fit, resilient or humpy, stiff, miserable.
By the way: We face the same challenge of conscious evolution in climate issues, in politics, in religious ideologies. “Flight or fight”, “friend or enemy” are no longer useful concepts. Evolution lies in our hands, we have to shape our human future. Now.
AND WHAT SHOULD NOT BE DONE DURING THE CANTIENICA EXERCISES AND WHY NOT?
I cannot answer this question in general. Each and every human being is an individual, unique. Every exercise has to respect this uniqueness. I have created a couple of thousand exercises in order to meet and match every body.
BENITA, WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR?
My method starts with the bones. The human body is a skyscraper made of bones. A skyscraper needs solid horizontal floors. The pelvic floor is one of the main floors. It stabilizes and mobilizes the pelvis and its important joints. It holds the organs of the lower torso in place – provided that the respiratory diaphragm does its job. That differentiates my pelvic floor training from all others: in order to really function as a lifelong stabilisation the pelvic floor and the thoracic floor have to work together, interconnecting everything with everything.
A fit pelvic floor prevents sagging of organs, incontinence, hemorrhoids for women. Enlargement of the prostate, hemorrhoids, hernias in men. A solid respiratory diaphragm prevents asthma and other breathing disorders in all genders. The heart profits enormously from a fully expanded and well trained upper diaphragm.
IS THIS METHOD IS ONLY FOR WOMEN?

Which means: Training twice a week for an hour and constant awareness of how I move, sit, stand during the day. That’s what it’s all about: Change bad postural habits for good ones. To me the discovery that my scoliosis was self-made, not an illness imposed on me, not a punishment of a god, that is for me the ultimate ticket to freedom. I love to pass that ticket to freedom on to others.

I rewrite the books regularly with my findings. I always loved writing and I always will.
TELL US PLEASE ABOUT THE CANTIENICA STUDIOS. HOW DID IT ALL START? IN WHICH COUNTRIES AND HOW MANY ARE THERE AT THE MOMENT?
In 1997 I wrote the first book, “Tigerfeeling – the sensual pelvic floor training”. It became instantly a bestseller. Physiotherapists, mid-wives, Physicians, florist, lawyers – women from all professions you can think of – wanted to be trained in order to pass the method on to others. So I created a school that is now internationally renowned and certified by Eduqua.
We changed 2019 into a Licensing system in order to certify the quality. The differences between teachers, who visited one course years ago and the trainers, who graduated the sophisticated new 4-levels-system and commit to regular up-dates and refresher trainings became huge. Well, fine lines and fine wrinkles cannot be prevented, unfortunately. Maybe not yet. But the sagging of the features, the ageing of facial expressions can be prevented. Looking at others in my age I am proof of this statement. Again, it’s about the bones: Keep the bones of your skull flexible and up, so the musculature sits firm and taut and resists gravity. Youthfulness is definitely possible with the proper training.
